TANGLE: A photography exploration of sensuality in contemporary Hong Kong cinema This photographic series examines the cinematic representation of sensuality in Hong Kong cinema. The project is derived from the differences and similarities in Hong Kong and Western cinema. Through experimentation with narrative photography, I aim to explore broader questions concerning Eastern cultural attitudes and values deriving from these differences and similarities. The core interest of this project is the cognitive connection between Hong Kong sensuality in cinema and the spectators’ conscious experience. This will involve concepts drawn from cinema theories studies such as Laura Mulvey’s (1975) essay of female as scopophilia and Christian Metz’s (1974) interpretation of the audience as voyeuristic. The aim was to create a project of cinematic photography in consideration of the relationship between film and photography, which to be followed by an exploration of sensuality within each specified culture using the film experiences. As a means to explore the role of consciousness in the audience for images.
